“We must never forget, but forgiveness can sometimes be achieved.”
The Governor of prison planet Elysium is about to uncover more about this job than he bargained for in this fast-paced sci-fi novel.
Elysium’s Shadow is book 1 of the Elysium Chronicles series.
“It’s been a hell of a first day.”
Jon May has been the Governor of Elysium for a few hours, and he’s already facing a belligerent Chief of Security, an ex-Operations Manager imprisoned for killing the previous Governor, and an amorphous energy mass that has its own agenda.
So now Jon has to decide who to trust; his Security Chief will barely talk to him, and his only allies people who are, according to the Republic, dangerous criminals.
With less than 48 hours to delve into the shadows surrounding Elysium’s recent but tumultuous past, May is about to uncover more about this job than he bargained for.

The plot is fun and enjoyable, the characters develop throughout and surprise in their actions, and the world building is strong. I particularly liked that one of the three main characters is deaf and the others treat it as a normal part of life to sign and make accommodations, and that it doesn’t stop her being the most powerful person around. It’s nice to see a disabled character portrayed positively and powerfully.
– Rosemarie Cawkwell, author of Hidden Fire
The new world and new society that Munson has created are intriguing and immersive and I was right there with it and didn’t want to leave it. I am very excited to see what comes next in this series and for these characters.
– Emma Wolf, author of ‘The Others’
Matthew lives in Thanet on the north Kent coast, a stone’s throw from the sea. He’s an epic fan of science fiction and fantasy; he loves everything from Terry Pratchett and Joe Abercrombie through to Arthur C Clarke and China Mieville – and a lot in between. The Elysium Chronicles is a series focused on an aging republic and a world between worlds.
When not writing, Matthew is a disability and sexuality advocate. He focuses specifically on “invisible” disabilities such as dyspraxia through T2D, the charity he co-founded, and on the asexuality spectrum.
