The Age of Magic, a coming-of-age folkloric fantasy novel, delves deep into mythology, exploring the hearts and minds of the characters to reveal the secrets they are reluctant to tell.
Touched by something strange and old, he knelt before her…
Tristan Rhymer has grown up on stories of Albion, a realm of wolves and wild woodlands. A realm of magic and monsters. A realm to which he and his parents must soon return.
But although Albion has flourished under the triumphant reclamation of Queen Mab, an attempt on her life exposes a dangerous new threat, summoned from the darkest corners of the long-ago ruined Iron Keep.
To defend her people and save her realm, Mab must seek the aid of a dragon. A dragon who waits in a forgotten cage, hidden deep in the ancient woodlands.
Tristan must learn to harness his newfound magic and ally with old enemies against the threat that will otherwise raze Albion to a wasteland of salt and ash and bone.

While one can certainly read The Old Ways simply for the pleasure of encountering the incredible world that Summers shapes, the storyline itself it captivating. I mentioned before the dark topics that Summers explores through the choices and circumstances of his characters, and I stress that the events that unfold never seem too predictable or too rushed. The Old Ways is a fantastic fantasy read dedicated to exploring both the nuances of faeries and the worlds they inhabit and the consequences of choice.
If you enjoy tales of surprising depth, I highly recommend The Old Ways.
The author has woven her own particular magic into this adventurous retelling of Thomas Rhymer. Like any fantasy worth its salt, The Old Ways submerges us into a whole other world, which means a whole world full of characters to get to know.
I was always going to love this one. It has faeries and talking horses and magical realms and everything. The Old Ways would make a lovely gift for fantasy fans and/or a selfish treat!
The story progressed fast, taking various unexpected turns. […] This made the story fun to read as I was never sure if the plot would take a traditional or unexpected route. A great strength of this story is its world building and you do feel part of the magical world RK Summers has created. It can be hard to do this so well done to Summers. Overall, The Old Ways is a good representation of good versus evil and covers a lot of interesting themes that the reader can ponder. The characters are realistic and most stand out as worth knowing and reading about.
This is a fine story, with a fitting end.
RK Summers currently lives in the North East of England, with zero intentions of leaving her bleak, windswept, and salt-stung homeland.
Her minor life goal is to read fifty books per year. Her major life goal is to be recognised in the street as “that author what wrote them books” or something to that effect. She would also like to one day pen a trippy and disturbing fiction featuring an alliance between Alice Liddell, Dorothy Gale, and Wendy Darling.
