Jay is different. You can almost feel him listening.
When Amy Blue wakes to find a stranger in her bedroom, she’s not particularly alarmed. This is beautiful, calm, androgynous Jay, who listens to her story and appears to want to help, with no hidden agenda.
“Somewhere in me a scream is rising, but I contain it. Just.”
Diazepam-fogged Amy isn’t the best person to investigate an unexplained death, but she’s the only one Jay can get through to.
On the run from her troubled past and controlling older (ex) lover, she winds up on a Welsh eco farm where she starts to rebuild her life, grounded by the earth and healed by the salt air.
But it isn’t just her inner self that she manages to uncover. There are living ghosts at Môr Tawel, and they’re as loud as the waters crashing over the shingle on the beach.
Amy’s new life has just started, and she’s already running out of time.

A debut novel that deftly steps between gritty reality and magic realism with an agility that many more seasoned writers would envy, this is a book that has a beating heart within its fascinating central character.
A timely novel of mental health issues, of understanding when to cease blaming ourselves for other people’s actions, and of finding a safe home […] this novel is strongly rooted in a recognizably British reality so I think even readers who aren’t magical realism fans would enjoy this accomplished debut.
In a culture where staying ‘pure’ is still regarded as a woman’s ultimate virtue, in a system that prefers silence and secrecy to truth and justice; amidst a mindset that does not mind crushing a woman’s dreams if it feeds male entitlement, it feels novel to imagine that lives like Amy’s are getting redeemed somewhere out there. That voices like hers are being heard. That experiences like hers are being counted. Even if it is set in another land. Even if it is all fiction.
Clare Stevens has lived most of her adult life in Nottingham with brief sojourns in four other UK cities. She began her career as a journalist, working mainly for the Nottingham Post group, before spending several years in government communications.
Recently she made the switch from spin-doctor to story spinner and embarked on an MA in Creative Writing at Nottingham Trent University, which she passed with distinction. Clare wrote her first novel Blue Tide Rising (2019) while on the course, and used it as the basis for her dissertation.
