John Humphrys – Lost For Words

John Humphrys – Lost For Words

A humorous look at an increasingly important subject.

This book outlinesthe mangling and manipulation of the English language that has gone on over the past few decades. Humphrys takes the reader through why English has deteriorated, going through Americanisms and the language of business and politics…and why it’s all a load of codswallop.

Some parts of the book are positively anecdotal, which simply adds to the humour or seriousness at the things being talked about. The rest of the book is in the style of an informal discussion, drawing in the reader and asking rhetorical questions to get them involved with what’s being said. It’s very easy to read, with even the ‘technical terms’ spoken about in such a way as to be accessible even if you have no idea as to what they mean! The chapters and sub-headings also mean it’s one of those rare gems of a non-fiction book that you can pick up and read for a few minutes whilst waiting for the kettle to boil.

This is one of the few books that I’d quite happily lend to someone else in order to get them to read it. (And believe me, that doesn’t happen often!) It’s a thoroughly witty and insightful study, and it’s a wonder that it isn’t on any English Degree reading list! As an English student, perhaps I’m a little bias when I say that everyone ought to read this book, but they certainly should. Some things that are highlighted, whilst done so very humorously, are very thought provoking in their truthfulness.

…I didn’t even manage to spot a single spelling error!
