What’s Happening? – September Edition

On this occasion I’ve got some big news to tell. We all want a piece of The Lost Symbol and it’s coming very soon, and here on I.Q we’ve got up to date news on its release and other recent and big time book news. Enjoy.

Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol is set for release on Tuesday 15th September and expected to break all publishing and book release records:

I remember waiting four hours to be around the tenth person to receive The Deathly Hallows on its release date. Now I like Brown’s work, but can we really expect The Lost Symbol to break Rowling’s book release and publishing records? More than six and a half million copies have been printed off for the highly anticipated sequel. I’ve got my copy ready, but I don’t know if I’m as excited as I was for The Deathly Hallows. I guess I’m just a big kid. However it is already on Amazon’s favourite seller list and not to mention Dan Brown himself is releasing an electronic version on the release date. Have you got your copy reserved?

Lemony Snicket is working on a four book series following from his best selling A Series of Unfortunate Events:

Snicket’s stories, involving the lives of three orphans has sold over sixty million copies worldwide. He is a real inspiration to many writers, and now he is working on a series of books which will be set for release in 2012. Snicket’s style is to attempt to persuade his readers to stop reading through some undignified acts by a melancholy character, and his new series is set to have a similar sort of style, to the disappointment of many critics. However I very much enjoy his gothic, sinister and melancholy writing, and I’m sure we can all expect a series of not only unfortunate but random events. If you haven’t indulged in Snicket’s ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’, I thoroughly recommend it, you won’t be disappointed.

Tolkien estate finally gives the thumbs up for Hobbit films:

At last! One of my favourite books ever read is The Hobbit. Its unprecedented adventure into middle earth before the rise of Mordor (yes I am a Lord of the Rings boffin) was just so exciting and ever since the trilogy was created into the masterpiece it was, I have been awaiting The Hobbit for a long time. The go-ahead was given by Christopher Tolkien, after a multi-million pound lawsuit against ‘New Line Cinema’ was settled by Tolkien’s heir himself.

David Walliams makes the shortlist for ‘Funny book prize’:

The Boy in the Dress, the first book by the Little Britain star, has made the final shortlist for the ‘Roald Dahl memorial prize’. Roald Dahl is one of the most significant and enduring children’s authors to have ever lived, (and personally one of my favorites) it seems completely suitable therefore to have David’s book, telling the story of Dennis who is a cross-dressing boy, as one of the finalists for Dahl’s memorial prize. Sounds terrific, Dahl would be proud.

Google books – a ‘misuse’ of the law?

Microsoft has interrupted Google’s multi-million pound deal to put thousands of copyrighted books onto the internet, calling it a ‘misuse’ of the law. Google hope to achieve a $125 million deal to digitise thousand of books online. My opinion is that books are best read as a book, not on the screen. It’s fair enough to have articles and scholarly books for one thing, but copyrighted books seem like one step too far. Call me old fashioned but let’s keep books as books and not on a machine. As me mother always used to say, “keep staring at that computer and you’ll get square eyes!”

  3. Apple has just released Ipad with competitive pricing and seemingly better features for their base model. Do you think launch of Ipad will affect the Kindle DX market? Regards :)
