New Releases – November 2009

Summer time has officially gone, the days are darker, and winter is soon to be on us. Even more reason to stay inside and read, rather than go outside and freeze. Some great books are coming to the shelf this November, including some fantastic crime thrillers from our favourite authors, a new Stephen King novel and an autobiography by Sarah Palin??? Um… ok, well do engage in some of the other titles suggested.

The Humbling by Philip Roth-2nd November 2009:

The Humbling by Philip Roth is the story of an aging actor, Simon Axler, who has lost his talent, wife and everything that defined him, but starts to find a new life in a younger woman.

Ford County by John Grisham-3rd November 2009:

Ford County is a collection of short stories that take place in (funny enough) Ford County, Mississippi, which was the setting of Grisham’s first novel, A Time to Kill. Considered the best work that Grisham has done, and one of America’s favourite story tellers, this collection of short stories takes us through a family journey, which is at breaking point from the start, with a brother on death row, who has one shot at freedom.

The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver-3rd November 2009:

This story takes place in the early 20th century and explores the life of Harrison William Shepherd, the child of a divorced American father and Mexican mother. Harrison is kicked out of the military, becomes a writer and is later investigated for ‘un-American’ activities.

Kindred in Death by J.D. Robb-3rd November 2009:

Kindred in Death is the 29th book in Robb’s ‘In Death’ series (which is hugely popular in America). When the new police captain’s daughter is brutally murdered, the captain specifically requests that Lieutenant Eve Dallas lead the investigation into the crime. A huge thriller with chases and scenes to make you shiver with fear. I was half expecting the Captain to go on some sort of murderous rampage to get revenge just like our favourite ass-kicking villains do, (coughs) Gerard Butler. But instead he’d rather get someone else to do his own dirty work. Maybe I watch too much TV.

Under the Dome by Stephen King-10th November 2009:

In Under the Dome, Stephen King has written a massive novel that he is comparing with The Stand. Under the Dome is the story of a Maine town that is subject to an impenetrable dome that isolates its citizens from the world. King has received an immense amount of awards for his books, and this one he declares will perhaps get him another. However from what I’ve read, I’m half expecting a Village-ish (a word I made up just now) feel to things (if you’ve ever seen the film). Society cut off from the outside world and made to believe in fake reality (sorry for the spoiler). Hmm, it’s been done.

I, Alex Cross by James Patterson-10th November 2009:

This is the 15th book in Patterson’s Alex Cross detective series. In this novel, Alex finds out that one of his relatives was brutally murdered. As he investigates the murder, he discovers the relative was involved in some wild and secretive activities, and that she wasn’t the murderer’s only victim.

Going Rogue by Sarah Palin-17th November 2009.

I can’t say I’m thoroughly interested (especially with a title like that for a Republican) but this is the ‘much anticipated’ autobiography of the former governor of Alaska.
